It’s been an exciting news week with the reported end of the Internet in less than 900 days to a look at Big Bird’s IT workshop.
- Virtualization Shrank Sesame Street – The folks at Sesame Workshop were looking at a $3 million data-center expansion to keep up with its Web, multimedia and data storage needs. Instead of expanding, the organization shrank its data center by consolidating 100 physical servers to 45 linux-based servers and virtualizing 25 data-center servers into five physical machines. The article details every aspect of managing virtual machines through out their life cycle.
- Internet End is Near – I’m waiting until we see people wearing signs crying, “The Internet End is Near! IPv6 Now!” Right now it’s still a dream. In the mean time Arbor Networks offers some great analysis on the failure of IPv6 to take hold. I think too many of us still have thoughts of chicken little crying “Y2K, Y2K” in the back of our minds.
- The Internet’s Birth – This seemed like an odd and logical segue from Internet death to birth. GigaOM is right when he says, “National Science Foundation has put together a really great web site that tells the story of the birth of the Internet, using videos, presentations and documents from its archives.” It’s a great place to “get your geek on” over lunch.

Just something to add to your list of “goings-on”… Heard of autonomics? I didn’t know what it meant but read a few articles about the topic. I belive the term is what we call “remediation” and there’s a lot of discussion about the need for network management solutions to include automatic resolution options. We’re launching a product on Sept 4 that includes this called Perspective in case you and your readers are interested. http://www.PacketTrap.com/Product
