The end of August is known for really one thing for those of us that live in the Twin Cities… the Minnesota State Fair. This is our Great Annual Minnesota Get Together that brings rides, attractions, entertainment, livestock, agriculture, and more for the 12 days before Labor Day.
I wanted to focus my blog on technology at the State Fair. In the past they’ve had a “Wonders of Technology” pavilion that showcases technology and alternative energy sources. However, on the Minnesota State Fair site and in their media materials (PDF) this year, the only thing I can find is a mention of their daily podcasts. Could it be that technology is no longer a focus at the Fair? I invite news bloggers to investigate…
But no worries, a great topic when discussing the State Fair is food. It’s shocking and yet incredible how many different things we can dip in a vat of fat and then serve on a stick to a long line of salivating patrons. In reviewing the options this year, here are my top 10 favorites in terms of originality and pure horror:
1. Bacon Wrapped Turkey Tenderloin On-A-Stick
Please head over to the health tent to get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked after you ingest this horrific concoction.
2. Butterscotch Cake On-A-Stick
Dinner and dessert in one! For the State Fairer on the go…
3. Candy Bars (Deep Fried) On-A-Stick
As if just a plain old Snickers isn’t bad enough
4. Coffee (frozen) On-A-Stick
Better than a Frappuccino? You be the judge.
5. Fried Fruit On-A-Stick
I bet folks looked at this and thought for a second “Fruit! Oh, that’s healthy.”
6. Hot Dish On-A-Stick
Only true Minnesotans can appreciate
7. Key Lime Pie Dipped in Chocolate (frozen) On-A-Stick
I’m just speechless
8. Pickles (Kool-Aid) On-A-Stick
Go for this right after you completed one of the stomach-churning rides
9. Walleye On-A-Stick
This actually got some rave reviews by notable food critics as published in today’s Minneapolis StarTribune.
